Wilfire 3 Schools Edition startup problem

Hi!

Newbie here looking for answers. Have spent hours trying to sort this out.

I'm loading the Schools Edition of Wildfire 3 and upon starting it gives the message:

No write access to: C:\users ....

Please choose another startup directory for trail creation.

What do I need to do here?

You've probably worked out that I'm not too savy on a pc. I've read that there are issues with Vista. I have Vista Home Basic on a Dell laptop. Does it work with this OS?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

You wan't to search for a file called config.pro in the Proe bin directory.

This file has a list of options that control where settings files are located at and to turn on or off certain features of the product. Search for config file help within this or any other forum and you will learn a lot.

When proe runs it keeps a record of all the icons and commands you use and all the spinning and zooming you do while in proe it records these files to your startup directory which for your school is probably C:\users\loginname.

Make a directory called trailfiles or any other name in your startup directory and change your option for trail directory shown below in bold to point to it or just delete the option from the config file and you'll be all set. All config options consist of the option and a value with a space between them. You may also deactivate an option by placing a ! in front of any option you don't want.

trail_dir C:\path\to\trailfiles

Trail files can be quite useful if Pro/E crashes unexpectedly. I was instructindg a class at school where someone haddn't saved for 2-3 hours and Pro/E crashed but by running back the trail file and inserting the save command was able to watch it play back and save the work that would have otherwise been lost.

Thanks Michael. Much appreciated.

I've spent some more time on this to no avail. I'll see the university lecturer and see if he can help.

Cheers.

Change your Start In directory within your shortcut's properties on the shortcut tab.

I think It's trying to start in a directory that doesn't exist and is looking for a config.pro file that isn't there. Pro/E needs to record a trailfile somewhere for pro/e to run and I think that's why it's failing.

Otherwise it might be a license server issue.

Thanks Michael.

We started it by running it as administrator (and a shortcut to a new file just named "CAD") and didn't have the same problem, but a new one.

Now it says license request failed for PROE_Schools: -9:

Invalid host.

So now (soon) I'll try starting it again with ahard connection to the internet (not wireless). I did this when loading it the first time, as was suggested, so maybe it will need to be done again, but I hope not every time.

I am now beginning to regret buying this Vista system instead of XP.

Cheers.
