Seems to me we still have to interact with people face-to-face, be on hand to resolve production issues, be on hand to brainstorm design issues, be on hand to resolve field issues be on hand to draw on company resources.
For an Engineer, it's usually best to be close to where the action is.
Not to mention the control of proprietary data.
