sweep path and guide curve issue

hey, i'm trying to morph a circle into an ellipse and after many, many hours, am still failing. i am trying to use the sweep boss and deform according to a guide curve and i keep getting an error: "the intermediate profile #2 could not be solved...". i've searched forum after forum and tutorials alike and i cannot resolve my issue.

i am not being allowed to upload a picture (access denied?!) but i can provide one to whomever can assist.

regarding the picture:

next step, once i can get a successful body would be to hollow it out to fit on the opening of the cylinder beneath.

i do not want to use the loft feature because i do not know how to hollow out the loft. although i could fish around for that (as i have come across some solutions for this), i want to know what is wrong with my sweep.

any help is most kindly appreciated.

Create two path curve sketches.
One sketch on the Front Plane containing a Straight line to control the length of the sweep and a guide curve.
Create another sketch on the Right Plane for your other guide curve.

Dimension your guide curves so that the distance from the center axis is identical at the start or end of the path.

Sketch your Cross Section or Profile as an Ellipse with one quadrant point being pierced by guide curve one and the other by guide curve two. Your guide curves will drive the ellipse to a circle because of the
Pierce Point constraints.

Are you doing the change as linear or using a spline curve?

i am using a spline curve.

from what you've written, it seems as if i have done all the above. i do not understand the sentence: "dimension your guide curves so that the distance from the center axis is identical at the start or end of the path"

try to use pears options. where if the two curve does not intersect this problem will occur.

couldn't you simply use the loft feature then the shell feature as I have, or am I missing something?

i ended up using the loft/shell technique. i was curious as to why the sweep wasn't working, though

I didn't know which direction you were sweeping in Circle to Ellipse or Vice Versa so I put "start or end of the path" in.


From the picture you posted the link to You can use the Circle that it appears you sketched to drive your Guide Curves location so they have the same distance from the axis.I dimensioned that in my gide curves because to achieve this with a sweep you must sketch the Profile as an Ellipse. In your case you'd probably want to sweep down from above.

I know this an old post, and I am trying to do what is in this post but cant get it to work. Could someone give a little step by step to create that last sweep in the picture (mjcole)?
