spec-driven piping editor

I am working on setting up a spec-driven piping system at my current company. I am working on setting up the .ptd files. In the help files within pro/engineer it says that you can use pro/table or any ascii editor. has anyone used an ascii editor with success? pro/table seems extremely archaic.
