Replace by family member using differnet constrants?

I have a cagecage assembly. I've created a family table to determine which version of a backplane to install. The backplane instances are also family table assemblies. So far so good. But when I try to use different sets of mounting holes for the different backplane instances the assembly constraints change in the generic and all other instances. I lookd for a way to add assembly constraints to the familly table but that doesn't seem to be an option

I'm using 2001 with the Advantage II licence so Interchange assemblies aren't an option. I have a feeling this would work if the backplanes were unrelated assemblies. That wouldn't be a terrible work around if I can separate them after the PCB drawings are completed.

Any suggestions? This is rapidly becoming more complex than it's worth.
