Machining tapered cup

Hi All,
I need to machine several tapered holes in an Alu plate
on the CNC mill using pro Nc Mill.
While the size is not critical (plus / minus 0.1mm) a
good surface finish is important.
A friend in another company says he can do this easily
with mastercam by machining the holes in a helical type
motion.
Therefore there are no steps like I get with Pro-E
(unless I use very small step depth, the hole has a 15
degree taper)
Is there anyway to do this in Pro-E?

thanks in advance.

Mastercam will not do anything that pro can't do as well. Are you using a ball end mill? Can you use a tepered end mill? There alot of ways to do what you want to do.

Hi padraig,

To do this in pro/man use a Surface Milling seguence. Pick the sides of the hole for your surface to machine and use cut line to define your cut. Pick the top circle of the hole for the first cut line and the bottom circle of the hole for the second cut line. After picking the cut lines go back into parameters and change the SCAN_TYPE to helical.

Thanks EJW. Thats exactly what I was looking for. I know it
could be achieved also with the the help of a ball nose of
tapered cutter but a sequence like this is better.

BTW. Is there any way to do this in a volume milling
sequence?

I haven't found a way to do this in volume. Volume is more for roughing and surfacing is more for finishing.

Yes there is a way to do this with volume milling.

You build a volume and trim it to your part. then create a volume milling sequence and set the parameters to follow hard walls and profile only.you can also set the wall scallop height parameter to a very small amount to smooth the surface.

I use it all the time. It is NOT just for roughingas EJW stated

Hi Tooldude
I have been unable to get the helical motion to work in
volume milling. The cutter still makes a complete
revolution and then steps down.
I am using pro-e wf3.
Do you happen to have any file with this sequence included
so that I could see it.

thanks
Padraig.
