Item number matching BOM

Is it possible to change the item number of a component in an assembly to match the item number listed in a BOM? That is, I want to reorder the BOM but the default item numbers are locked to the order the components were added to the assembly.

I usually just change the balloons to text and manually enter item numbers in the BOM. There must be a way to link everything without losing flexibility (such as simply changing the item order). Any suggestions?

Solved it. I had to link the assembly to the correct BOM table. Then the balloons will update with the item numbers shown in the table.
