Is it possible to convert datum points?

I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to convert datum point that are created from references to a specified coordinate system. That would really make my job less time demanding.

Today I create and modify a lot of parts by inserting geometry copiesfrom the assembly into the part and creating datum points by using the copied geometry as references. Since all the parts need to be independent from each otherThe next taks is to make all these points independent from the copied geometry. (this is done by measuring the distance (x,y,z) from the csys of the part and then creating datum point related to the csys).

there must be an easier way to do this. It shouldn't be that hard for the program to calculate the distance and make the datum point independent automaticly.

Please help

One of them 'pay me now / pay me later' propositions, huh?

A couple of methods that come to mind...
_ Export the datum points, extract them from the export* and read the list
into a CSys Offset point set.
_ Collapse the datum points into an Independant Geometry feature.

thanks, this will save me a lot of work. While your at it. Do you know any way to make a part, that has references from other parts in an assembly, independent.

It shouldn't be that hard for Pro/E to convert all references and relate them to the Csys of the part. Do you know any way to do this?

That's a pretty big assumption. I'm sure it could be done easily
for some cases but be rather difficult to nearly impossible for
others. (I wonder if anyone's ever written a Offset CSys Point
routine with a graphical 'getpoint' input function?)

Maybe someone else knows things I don't that would make it
'easy' but for each external reference you want to get rid of
you'll have create supporting geometry before the dependant
feature and Reroute the references. Methods will vary with
entity type. Think ahead when creating external references. Not
only whether or not to create them but what particular type of
entity(s) and how it's created; i.e. if you create a Sketch or
Offset Plane solely dependant on an external part face you have
a pretty complicated task ahead of you in removing the dependancy.
(FWIW, I've seen 'easier' systems and was not impressed because
it amounted to making houses of cards. More 'pay me now, pay me
later' deals.)
