VPN's can be finicky, thats why I opt to use the locked license to a usb adapter, as for needing to plug a network card in, its kind of true; the way around that is to set a static IP and subnet to the adapter (USB adapter) and your license will work fine, tried and tested
Looking back I think your issue is that your not using a VPN client on your network but a remote client, which is different.I think your using something like remote desktop where you can see your machine and limited network resources. If your using a VPN client you actually are logining into the network via your home machine and have all of the network resources that your IT guys see fit.
Depending on your network system, switch firewall, etc. that is where you would get your VPN client software to work. Once you get that you can than see the floating licenses and check them out, it would be like your on the network at work, where a remote desktop your logging into a particular machine.
Sounds like a firewall or something is messing with your VPN....connection, can you connect to a shared drive on your machine at work with your home computer?
No it does not have to be in a shared folder, I want to make sure that you can see the network resources ok.
Your 100% sure that the license is a floating and not locked, if you type use the ptcstatus in the proe load point \bin directory does the license say locked or floating?
If you install say a portable network card (ie USB) you dont need to fiddle with the registry, all you need to do is disable all other cards after you boot up, then start ProE, if you have a floating license then you need to run ptcshutdown then ptcstartserver from the flexlm\bin directory, to renew the license. If you do this often then put shortcuts on the desktop to make it easier, it only takes about 5 seconds when you start the computer.
I've been using remote desktop with a VPN connection for about 2 years now, and it works fairly well. The trick to get around the lag time is the config.pro option that controls the graphics driver. For some reason using OpenGL doesn't work very well over the network, so you need to use this option in your config.pro file when you load Pro/E: graphics win32_gdi (assuming your running MS XP). I'd also use the simplest graphics display options you can:
blended_transparency no
shade_moving_comp no
texture no
transparency no
Each option will add time to the refresh rate of the system your running it from. I'm in the same situation you are, and I tried using the floating license, but it proved to be more hassle than it was worth.
pro-eek's USB dongle is the solution that I use (see earlier in the thread) between working from home and work.The tech support at myreseller helped me set it up. Once set up it workswell but I do need to takethe files I'm working on with me as accessing overa VPN ispainfully slow.One tip - remember to take the dongle with you!

Yes the dongle goes on whichever PC you want to run Pro/E. I'm by no means an expert in this but as I understand it, the pro/e license file is linked to a unique hardware address (host id). Usually this would be the pc you're using and the license would be fixed to it. However,a network adapter also has a suitableunique address and can beused instead. You will need a newlicense file though but this can be arranged (in my case) through the reseller. The network adapter is only used for its address, I don't actually use it as a network adapter.
