Installing at/Working from home

Believe it or not, I am still wrestling with this. Actually, I gave up for a while because I was becomnig consumed with it. Okay, question. Where does the license files that pro/e lends go when it is lended out; Is there ONE file i need to find or is it impossible to find this file, or should my be hooked up to the server before i can have this file.

To do license borrowing, you need to be connected to your network, then run the license borrow utility, then disconnect from the network and verify. Also, be sure you have installed the license on your serer that allows license borrowing.

DGS offered a good solution, use PCMCIA card for laptop and use card's ID to generate a new license,

or

use a USB network adapter (wireless or ethernet), once again use adapter's ID to generate a new license (get physicall address of adapter by typingipconfig /all inWindows command promptwindow)

make sure the new adapter is read first by PC when booting up (plug it in!), by changing the network card order in the registry and changing network card bindings.

Change to new license file in Pro/E setup

You now have a USB"dongle" in the form of your USB adapter, that you can carry around.

couple questions

1. will i always need to be connected to a network, because when disconnected I have no ip address showing. Seems i've heard about a way to disable this.

2. where can i find the elusive license file?

No you dont have to be connected to a network, you must generate a new license file online using your PTC maintenance account, or get your Pro/E supplier to help you.

You must supply your "CPU ID" which in fact is your USB adapter's unique ID, see previous post. You must install your USB adapter's drivers and connect it, then you'll see it listed when typing ipconfig /all in a DOS command prompt window, its listed next to physical address for your adapter

I know i have borrowing capability, I know how to generate it; when i generate it, i have no idea what type of file it is and where it is located.

The PTC website or your Pro/E supplier will email it to you as a text file, which you then need to refer to when doing your new licence setup in Pro/E. Please ask your supplier for more advice

Good luck!

At the risk of sounding like either an idiot or an anus

, I'm going to ask this question once more but a little differently.

I have Pro/E on my desktop, it works so I have a license file. Now, what I am NOT understanding is this: What tells Pro/E installed on my DESKTOP to let Pro/E installed on my LAPTOP to function.

PLEASE, can I have complete answers.

I will take a stab at what you are trying to do here, and if I'm off track I apologize. You want to make sure you run the borrow utility on your Laptop. First you need to connect to the network, run the utility, then you can disconnect. I don't believe that you can run the utility on the Desktop and transfer the license to your laptop. I think what pro-eek and the rest are referring to is physically going to PTC's website and getting the permanent license file attached to a USB drive....but I may be mistaken here.

I have a similar situation, but what I do with my laptop is similar.

1. Connect to network

2. Run Borrow Utility

3. Disconnect from Network

4. Restart Pro-E

It's a little cumbersome, but it works. I hope this helps you in some way.

Somewhere during the course of the day, I realized that we were on the same page; just a diffferent book!

dannerj is correct, thats what I meant:

get a new license for a removable USB network adapter(card)

set this device up as the 1st network adapter to be read by your PC and laptop

isntall the new license file on PC and laptop

use Po/E with your removable USB adapter

Okay.

Now, one more question. I have went as far as to uninstall mynetwork card (not physically) but when i reboot it's back in the lineup at the number one spot. How can I make it number two?

this is a snippet borrowed somewhere here on the board:

You probably need to change the order of Network cards seen in Windows registry.

Start Menu > Run > regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > WindowsNT > CurrentVersion > NetworkCards.

In here you may find more than one folder with values in it. Simply change the value of the folder containing details of the network card that Pro/E is looking for to one with a lower value than all the other folders (you might need to rename folder (if there is one) '0' to something else first.

I have come across this problem many times on laptops with wirelness network cards installed (ptchost id changing depending on whether a netowrk card is in use).

Hope this helps,

Phil

Be carefull! The borrowing is for increments of "days". You can not borrow for an hour or half day. Your boss might not like it if you go in on Monday and can't get the license back till Tuesday.

I have had problems when my computer crashed and had to wait a day for the licence to come back when floating the license. Even floating the licencewe have problems when computers crash. I have not been able to access my licence after a computer crash after re booting my computer. It tells me "no licence available" when I check the ptcstatus, It says I am using it butit is a license available. Makes no sence to me. I have to shut down an wait 15 minits. They tell me that you can "purge" the license manager. But that takes server access I do not have.

This is the easiest way to work at home... Change the license file thru the website for your home PC. then change it back. Just let PTC knowonthe web site what one it is on. (of course youhave todisable it on the other pcto stay legal)

Haspulled this offsuccessfully? I can rename the folder, but the network card installed inside the computer continues to show up in the license pack generator.

Flexlm is what tells the other machines that a license is available. If you have a fixed license you cannot share it or borrow it and flexlm will not be installed on the machine.

The ideas of fixing the license to a movable network card are good, however my expeirence is that on half of the machines I had done had trouble with.

The borrow feature expires at midnight of that day, when you run the borrow it tells you when it will expire.

I now on all of my laptops (as an admin) make themuse the check out functionality with no issues for people wanting to work at home. Legal would have a field day if I were to allow a user to install ProE on a home machine!

How about using a locked license and using a thumb drive usb network adater? tie you license to the thumb drive, then you may need to re-arrange your network cards in the regisrty as seen here ( http://proeguru.com/2-network-card-registry-pro-e-fix )

then the license goes where the thumb drive does, I think this is fair within the license agreement being as it can only be used at one place at a time.

It will work if you get the license tied to that adapter and you use that as your main adapter in the machine, which on some requires a reboot. In the post someone mentioned how to make sure that this is your primary adapter. You will need to tweak the windows settings to make it work but it will, I have done this in the past, on some laptops you sometimes need to plug a network cable in so that the adapter is seen in XP depending on the adapter power settings.

On license borrowing, I tested this and it works. If you check the license out with 0 days it expires on midnight that night, so you can borrow the license and have it returned before the next day. In your case you have VPN access so that is not a big deal, VPN in, borrow the license and than work.

I promise ya, I would if I could get it to work. Same with network installation, can find anyone at PTC to explain how it works.
