SYM files, which are symbols, can only be open in a drawing or in from a format.



Before opening them, you can also do a preview to see if it's the symbol you really want

In drawing interface :

format > Symbol Gallery > define > give a name and go on...

read the help if you want to create an efficient symbol..

i think that guys from PTC have done an excellent work on symbols.. well done
