How do you render from solid color to "see-through"

I've seen many renderings of models (like cars) that show the exterior body go from a solid to see-through.

How is this done?

View-Model Setup- Color and..- Modify from model (select)- Advanced- Transparency

That makes the entire part transparent... I'm curious how to make the color gradually change from solid to transparent...

photoshop.

take two images, one solid one opaque and combine them.

Theres a little more to it than that, but its not difficult.
