Dimension ’Read only’ why?

G Andersson

New member
New to Solid works. Have done the tutorials.

Did a new part and I am not able to double click dimensions in the drawing sheet to get a modify dimension box to open. i.e. the Dimension window opens up to the left side of the screen and when I open the properties window it show the dimension as Read only.

Also a second problem. When trying to produce a Section view, it doesn't see a hole and orb port???? If I delete the section view, and try again to do a section view of a different view, the view name advances and still does not show the hole or orb port. eg. says the previous name was M-M then the new section is N-N although M-M doesn't even exist????

Thks,

You have to use "insert model items" in the drawing. This is assuming you dimensioned the sketches used to create the features. From the help files:
Click Model Items
Tool_Model_Items_Annotation.gif
on the Annotation toolbar, or click Insert, Model Items.

The "rolling" view name can be a little annoying, but you can rename the views in the PropertyManager.

Peter,

Thanks for your reply. Yea my son who is also new to Solidworks but not as new as me said the same thing when he got home this evening. No where did it say that one must Insert Model Items in order for the dimensions to be 'linked' to the actual part but that makes sense. Guess the Auto Dimension shouldn't be used if one wants to up date the part by changing dimensions in the drawing.

Do you have any idea why when I try to do a section view thru the front view, it actually ends up just doing another view which is just a 'side' view i.e. just show the outside of the block?

I can do a section view in another view projected from the front view and it works ok. or I can do a section view at a different location in the front view and it works fine but it doesn't work at a location where I have a hole wizard formed hole and an orb port located. Could it be something to do with how the hole and port were drawn/inserted. When I do a section view thru the hole and orb port in the side view the section view works just fine. ????

I also would rather be able to insert the orb ports be inserting to a point rather than having to locate from a surface edge as is presently required. I don't know how modify the insertion process. I would imagine one can save the existing design Library 'feature' and then somehow 'massage' locating process some how.???

Re: section view- so you can create any section view, except when you try to cut through a location that passes through both a hole wizard hole and an orb port?

Have you tried to set thread quality to high? Also, look to see if there isn't some kind of selection box in the property manager that indicates what components you want to cut. But I'm just guessing now...
