Diameter Datum Target

verge

New member
I'm trying to add a diameter datum target to a drawing.

I use Insert>Draft Datum>Target. I choose the datum plane that I want to use.

For "Target", I choose diameter.

For "GET DTM SEL", I leave it set to "Select Point" and select the point.

At this point, both the datum plane and datum point that I've selected are highlighted. I select "OK" in the Select dialog box, and "Done" in the "Exit" dialog box.

I use "show/erase" to attempt to show the datum target, but nothing happens, even if I repaint the window. What the ...? Why doesn't this work?

do you want something like this?

if so insert a new axis through the hole and change the properties to the boxed datum symbol and cchoose in dim from dialog box. click your diameter. done

Verge,

Its been a long time since I made a datum target, But I seem to rember that you have to select the diameter dimension. Show the dimension for you cosmetic sketch then create your diameter target. After you select the location it shoul ask you to select a dimension that you want for the diameter; pick the sketch dimension that show prior to creating the target.

After I select the location, I am not prompted to select a dimension for the diameter. I've been screwing around with this for hours now...I think a rant is in order...

Verge ,

I crated one last night as a refresher (WF2). Are you certain that you are following your previous selections and selecting a diameter type target? if not you will not be prompted. (I've got a funky microsoft mouse and some times I think I selected when I actually did not). The prompt after selecting the location should be to select "dimension for dim". Once selected it will disapear from where you showed it and pop into the target balloon. (if not than 2 decimal place will not fit).

later Jim.

Alright, give me a minute and I'm going to show step-by-step what I'm doing. This is in WF3, by the way...

I'm obviously messing up somewhere (I'd better be messing up somewhere)...

Here's the assembly. I'm trying to call out a circular area on plane C as a datum target (Quality wants to take three points within a 1-inch diameter around the pin to act as the plane against which to measure perpendicularity of the pin):

I choose Insert>Draft Datum>Target and choose Plane C:

I choose Diameter:

2009-04-29_141743_fixtureperp3.zip

I'm prompted to "select datum point". I select a datum point that lies at the intersection of the axis of the pin and plane C. (I am not prompted to "select curve"):

Now, the prompts stop altogether. No features are created. If I select "Done", nothing happens: when I try to show/erase datum targets, nothing shows up.

Sorry about all the ZIP files, but having problems reducing size of images while still making them clear....

sorry not up to speed on wf3. Seems like you should be getting at least one more prompt to select the balloon location. In wf2 curve selection is not required the leader is automatically trimed to the diameter dimension so it apprears to be attached to the curve.

Doesn't wf3 allow you to place tartget on the model in an annotation feature? have you tried that?

Haven't tried it. Don't know how to do it. Know of any good tutorials on that?

What's really annoying is that this is a fixture, and we'll probably only ever produce a few more of these. With the time I've put into this, we should be mass-producing these babies...

if push turns to shove, blow away the diameter and make it a retangle with dimensions. an areas is an area, nothing says it has to be round.

In going through your first post when you get to the last stepafter you select the point it comes up with a get point dialog box, check the message area. It should be asking forthe symbol location, select a location on the screen, when you do that check the message area again it should be asking for the dimension for dim and select the dimension for the cosmetic area. From your steps it appears you are exiting the target creation before everything is defined. Datum targets are still created in drawing mode in WF3.

It should be asking for the symbol location and dimension, but it isn't. It accepts my selections and highlights both the plane and point on the screen (both are in red), then when I "OK" the selection of the datum plane, nothing at all changes in the message area.

I'm not prompted for a location on the screen, nor for a diameter. Then, I start banging my head against the wall and screaming hysterically...

I checked the updates but didn't see any issues reported with datum targets. You might try reporting it if you can. Here is a pic of the menu you should see after picking the point for reference.

I went back and tried again after noticing you had an assembly point and I'm assuming the Plane C was a plane in one of the parts. When I tried selecting a plane from the part and an assembly point ProE wouldn't create the target. You also might try creating the point in the part that contains the C plane and see if you can define the target.

Well, I managed to get this thing to work. Started over with a simple part and played around a while.

Here's what I found:
<UL>
<LI>I had to choose the point from the layer tree, not the model tree.</LI>
<LI>When I chose the point, I had to choose the symbol "APNT0:F15(DATUM POINT)", rather than choosing "F15:APNT0"</LI>
<LI>Then I had to, as JFLORES suggested, choose the dimension from the cosmetic sketch I had drawn earlier to illustrate the area I wanted to call out.</LI>[/list]

Two more questions: how do I make the text fit the balloon, and how do I make the datum plane callout specify "C" instead of "C1" (the plane is C, after all)?

Thanks for your help, everyone...

Another question: why does the datum target symbol keep disappearing? If I try to convert the file to a PDF, I lose the d*** datum target! It's just gone, and I have to go through the whole process over again!

I've also found that if I save the file, then close it and re-open it, the datum target is gone!

In neither of these cases can I just "show" the target again...it's completely gone...

I think it's time for a rant...look for me in rant n' rave..
