cylindrical datum?

I am attempting to duplicate a print that was created in UG and have
been unable to figure out how to define a cylinder as a Geom Tol
Datum. I can define the axis but the customer wants the actual
cylindrical face shown as the datum. I would do this as a note
but Pro/E wants the datums defined before you can use them in GD&T
blocks. Any suggestions?

Why would you want to apply it that way? I don't think that fits within ANSI GD&T. I believe the normal application is to place the datum label in the diameter dimension of the cylinder. In either case, you can fake it out by setting the cylinder axis as a datum in the model(using "set datum") and then creating and usinga drawing symbol that looks like your datum labels. You can then apply the datum label however you want in your drawingand the datum will appear as a choice in the geom tol menu.

the ANSI accepted method would be t oattach the datum tag to the dimension controlling said cylinder.

Thank you for the information - it helps greatly. One further question - how do I go about placing the datim tag?

Thanks

You have to use the "set datum" function. When you do that, you have the option of displaying it "in dimension." How you get to that function depends upon which version of proe you are using.

I am using WildFire 2.0. I found the "in dimension" option.
I am guessing that this has to be on a diameter dimension as I can't
seem to get it to attach it to a created dimension. This leads to
my next question. How do I create a diameter dimension on a
section view where the section is planar with the cross section of the
part. I am posting it as a new topic to keep things organized.

Ok, now I have a dimension created but I am still unable to plate the
datum tag on the dimension. Any suggestions? Please see my
other post on New Ref dimensions for a picture of what I am trying to
achieve.

the key to attaching a DATUM tagto a dimension, is to have the dimension showing prior to entering the edit/setup/gtol/set datum dialog. you can do this by "editing" the feature where the dimension is located, and then (without refreshing) enter the set datum dialog.

Unless something has changed in wf2, you can attach a gtol to a created dimension in the drawing. You just can't attach a datum label. I have gotten around this by creating a symbol that looks like a datum tag and placing it near the dimension. I attach it to the dimension with the "relate to object" function.

If your cylinder is a proe feature -- that is, if you sketched its cross-section in proe to create a revolved protrusion -- then you should be able to "show" the model diameter dimension in the drawing.

select the datum axis.

right click and select "properties".

click "-A-".

select "On Geometry".

select the diametrical edge of the cylinder, and there you have it.

the datum symbol is a bit difficult to move around and get lookign right.
