Best Practice for trimmed bulk components

Hello,

Many of my modeled assemblies include frames and "support furniture" made out of either structural steel beams, wood, etc. What's the preferred or inteded way to work with this type of materials?

What I usually have is long sections of wood, or beams which I just call as templates for new components and then trim as needed, but it is always complicated to estimate how many meters of 4x2 s or C type beam I would need for a final assembly. I know I could find a way to show the lenght parameter on each model, but It seems complicated and being that the trims are not always straight, it wouldn't work.

It would also seem useful for sheets of material be it sheetmetal, MDF or wood panels, to have an estimated area so we can nest and prepare (I haven't used the sheetmetal module don't know if it has some features for this).

Thanks!!
