Best Practice for modeling complex 2D Pattern

I would like to know some techniques for modeling an offset pattern similar to the one detailed below:



0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

_0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

_0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0



The goal is to be able to create the first hole and then pattern to get all the remaining holes. I have used pattern relations before for other complex patterns, but I don't remember the code I used to designate a different offset for odd rows
 
I agree... in 2001, you can create the 2-directional pattern below, and then switch it to a pattern table and remove the instances marked 'x'
