Beam Element X-axis

When making Beam elements, there is a magenta arrow that indicates the direction of the X-Axis. If you click on it a second time, it will reverse direction. The tutorial I have does not say why the arrows need to go one way versus the other. Does anyone know the method behind determining which way they should go? Thank you for your time.

i have used beams extensively in my analyses ... the direction of the x axis never was an issue and i think is not significant ........
