64 bit computer?

ZIMMER1

The question is- if I get a 64-bit computer to run 64-bit Pro-E off of a flexlm license server (with everyone else running 32-bit Pro-E) what will my difficulties be with all my other office interfaces because they are 32-bit types?

Examples of the office stuff are -Outlook, project, Adobe Professional, excel etc. everyone knows the other common ones as well.

Also, I am not sure the IT dept will buy any thing else to accomidate me should any third party be needed for functionality.

There will be no problem as far as the files are concerned. An assembly created on a 64-bit system or unix or linux will open in 32-bit.

Your 32 bit office apps will have no trouble running on the 64 bit system.

HOWEVER, printers, devices, and anything requiring a device driver must be 64-bit compatible. You will need to do your homework to ensure you don't end up with a device you regularly use that won't work with the 64 bit OS.

Another issue to consider: while 64-bit opens the door to much larger datasets, it's not faster. It's slower, when performing the same tasks. So 64-bit is not better than 32-bit, assuming you're talking about models and tasks that a 32-bit system can handle. Check the benchmarks out there (OCUS) that show this difference.

We had 3 64 Bit XP machines we ended up going and reloading 32 Bit XP. The main reason was we had too much trouble with other applications that we use such as main frame connection software. Our company decided that it was not worth the additional cost and inconvenience since we would now need a cheap system for them to use certain applications on.
64 Bit reminds me of the Alpha workstation days!
As for ProEngineer on it, we only saw a difference on large assemblies, any think else was negligible or the same. We also found out the the build matters as well, one of the older 64 bit builds ran lousy, than we went to a newer one and it was much better.

I experienced no problems installing and running standard64-bit ProE on 64-bit XP. I used Office 2003 and Adobe acrobat 8 standard.

The toolkitsused in the company (import/export of data to finacial system and laser-cutter)could not be loaded on 64-bit ProE..... I guess it is because they er compiled to 32-bit.

That's a great help. Thanks for the imput!

I am glad we just ordered the 32 bit. Would have been a never ending issue with hardware interfaces.

Just not worth it.
