2 sessions of Proe with PDMLINK?

Does anyone know how to run two sessions of proe with pdmlink?

I have tried launching another session but it will tell me that it is running another cached workspace

Thanks,

Brandon.

Just out of curiosity, why is that you want to do this? I believe your logon is only allowed one connection to a Workspace, thusly one "cache"

The cache has to be unique for each sesion of Wildfire/PDMLink. It is by design. Why can't you just load multiple parts into a single session of Pro/E and switch between them? the other method is to set the cache directory to be unique for each session of Wildfire.

I could put the files into the same workspace, but it gets complicated. There are two different divisions of this company I am working with, they have different servers in the server registry (Tools, server registry)If I want to switch to the other parts to work on, I have to switch servers, and then of course, erase everything from memory. on huge ass'ys, this is not convenient. If I had two sessions going, I could minimize one, maximize the other.

looslib-How would I set the cache directory to be unique to each session? i don't even know how to lauch the second session without it telling me to erase all.

Thanks,

BLien

This is one of the serious shortcomings of Pro/INTRALINK 8 and PDMLink. With Intralink 3 I regularly used to have 2 sessions of Pro/E running from separate workspaces. In one workspace I would have had an 'As Stored' version of an assembly and in the the other workspace I would have the modified assembly I was working on. Failed references could then be easily identified and corrected. I could also check-in modifed Pro/E data from the second workspace. Now, it is a time consuming task of having to back-up Pro/E data. The other shortcoming is that you can now not have multiple workspaces open. I HATE the embedded browser in Pro/E. I hate it even more when Pro/E crashes and now takes out Intralink with it - corrupting your workspace in the process.

I really think PTC have got issues with this software.

The environment variable PTC_WF_ROOT controls where the local cache is stored (default location is C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\PTC\ProENGINEER). To run multiple sessions of Pro/E from different local cache locations, create a batch file that launches Pro/E after setting PTC_WF_ROOT=C:\xxxx (where ever you want the cache directory to be). You could run one session using the default local cache and use the batch file for your second session. Or, just open a command prompt window, type "set PTC_WF_ROOT=C:\xxxx", then enter your command to launch Pro/E.

If you do this, I suggest working out of separate workspaces in each session, so that both sessions are not competing with the same server-side workspace.

Does everyone use the embedded browser? I have found it very annoying and prefer a separateie window instead. If you use ieand pro/e crashes - will the files be corrupt? pjw: have you tried?

Thank you for the tip DanWolf, very useful.

If you use a separate window, you can only see your server-side unmodifed data in your workspace. Performance is much better but aside from that it's virtually useless to you.
