split family table in pieces

I have a rather large ass'y family table that I would like to break into groups with separate generics. I though of backing up the generic to another directory to retain the family table, remove the instances I don't need thenrename everything andmove the newly created ass'y back to main folder.Is there an easier way or is this the best approach?
