slider along curve?

I'm basically trying to make a slider that runs along a
curved groove rather than a straight one, and I have no
idea how to go about this. A typical slider doesn't seem to
work. Any ideas?
 
So I got the converse to work, as in I have a part that
slides in another along a curve, but the slider part is
immobile and the part with the groove is the one I
manipulate. I made the slider part stationary (placed it
first in the assembly using default), and the part that
owns the groove as a set of many slot constraints(5, but I
probably only needed 3).

If I were to constrain the slider part as something mobile
(like a cylinder) and place constraints on the part with
the groove so that it can't translate, would that
potentially work? This seems very roundabout.

Ok so I got it to work, I set the slider to a cylinder (the
curve that it followed was helical), and placed the part
with the groove to be followed as a set of 3 slot
constraints and a rigid constraint. That seemed to make
things move how I want them to move.

The question of whether or not there is an easier way still
stands, and I'd like to know.
