symbol invalid ?!!? the dimension is like @d and you need to replace d with o and write what you want to show, like @o23





and it can't be done with shown dimensions, only with created dimensions.


I guess you have dimensions from model that's why isn't working.
 
Don't rename the dimension itself, when you click on Properties -> Dimension Text, replace the @D in the upper box with &O (I think it may be case sensitive) & write your text (or numbers).
 
If it is show/erase diemension you cant do it, but for created dimension use @o(small caps) instead of @d
