Opening Parts/Dwgs

I am wondering if there is a way to open up a part file based off the existing part that you have open. For example if I have a drawing open DrawingA.dwg and I hit the open button it goes straight to DrawingA.dwg and has it highlighted. But if i have only PartA.prt open and I hit the open key it shoots me to the start of the folder which could be quite a distance away and I would like to get it to start on PartA.prt so I can open up PartB.prt easily. I know this is probably just me being lazy but I dont understand why it works for drawing files but not part files. I'm using WF3 if that helps any.

I'm notsure what your situation is. I don't knowthe intent for openingPartB.prt. Anyway, I'll give you some info. We are still using WF 2, but I'm sure the process issimilar, if not the same.

If your drawing containstwo models, one is shown as active at thebottom of the screen under "Name: ____". When selecting the File>Open, the active model in the drawing is the default file to open. This will be the file highlighted when you are presented with the Workspace or Active Directory. In order to activate the model that you want to retrieve, select File>Properties>Drawing Models>Set Model. Select the model that you want active. Now when selecting File>Open, this will retrieve the model that is now active. To change the active model, tou can also double click on the active model name (at the bottom of the screen). This will offer all models that the drawing is using to create views (notcomponents of an assembly). This is quicker than going through the menu structure.

If you are not seeing the active model in the tree, you select Show>Use Model in Tree and select the model in the drawing (just pick a view of the model) and this will then show the model selected in the tree. Speaking of this, you can select the model in the tree (the part or a component of an assy), right click, and select "Open".

If the active model is an assembly, you can select open and select "In Session". This will provide all components in memory in order to retrieve the drawing. If you have more than one drawing open it will list all items retrieved by that drawing as well.

Here are my two examples of the problem i'm encountering. I like how in drawing mode I can open a file and it goes directly to the active part like WillyT described. But if I have only part or assembly open it just jumps directly to the start of the directory making you have to scroll back to your last position. I am looking for a way to get the part/assembly open dialogue box to stay at the active part instead of jumping to the begining of the directory.</v:shape>

try file save as. it should take you to the filey current directory an you can use right click browse to open. the original path to copy paste into pro-e.

Hello Jonathan.

Well, it might be possible to solve you "problem" with a mapkey. Please have a look here:

Its possible with this kind of "etended" mapkeyto grab some of the first numbers/letters in the active part and use them in the open dialog box (like en8*).

Have a try yourself. Before I will use time on it, I would like to know:
1) What is it excactly, thatyou want. Describe even more detailed.
2) Do you (or maybe others) still have interest in a solution.

Thank you for the link to the information regarding scripts, I have never worked with them before so I've learned quite a bit. From what I've learned I was able to make a key that atleast gets me close with a few steps.

Below is the script that I took from the forum and modified. It pretty much takes my active part and makes a drawing with the same name in memory and then with that drawing open it pulls up the open dialogue box with the part highlighted that I was last working on.

The flaw with this mapkey is if I have the drawing already open for that part it wont work because of the name already being in memory. Also I need to close out of the garbage drawing and erase memory before I can makea new drawing for the parts once I am done.

Benefit for me from all of this is I figured out how to make a script to make a drawing instantly from a part.

Thank you for your help on this one. If you have a better Idea then the script I wrote let me know. All I want to do is have my open dialogue box open up on the part I have open like it does when you use it in a drawing.
