Extruding along a cylindrical surface?

Hello, I am relatively new to Pro/E and this forum. Anyway, I
have a problem that I can't figure out on my own. What I need to
do is extrude a series/pattern of shapes into the edge/circumference of
a cylindrical solid. These holes are very shallow (~6-16
nanometers), and are patterned both horizontally and vertically if you
were to look at the cylinder from the side. The problem I'm
having is when I make a datum plane and then extrude into my part from
the plane, the bottom of the "hole" doesn't follow the contour of the
radius. Is there a way I can make the design on a flat surface
and then wrap it around a circular datum curve, or what is the best way
to accomplish this?

Thanks!

Nobody is replying and I'm not sure if it's a dumb question or if I
wasn't clear enough or what. Basically though, you could think of
it as modeling the tread on a tire. What is the easiest way to do
that?

You might try making the hole a revolved cut if you want the bottom of the hole to be radial.

yeah from what i understand its more of a toroidal bend thingy

do you want something like this? this part is called a stent. but it has the pattern radially along it. and vertically up.

there are afew models u can get from the "files" sections of this
forum. just get one of the files and pull it apart to see how to
reproduce it.

if you still need help let me know.

laxman12786,

I think all you need to do is offset the outside surface of the cylinder inward 16 nanometers and extrude up to the offset surface. That will give you the same contour of the cylinder.

Hope this helps,

I'm pretty sure that the toroidal bend is what I'm looking for!
However, when I go to make my cuts (which vary from 6 to 16 nanometers)
I get an error telling me that it lies entirely outside of the
part. In the sketch/preview it clearly shows that it intersects,
but when I tell it to make the cut it says the model won't be changed
since it doesn't intersect. Any ideas? The way I cut it was
I put a datum plane 1mm from the surface and told it to extrude down
1.006 (.006 was less than the minimum extrude distance).

Sounds like you need to increase the accuracy. You may need to switch from relative to absolute accuracy as well.
