Choice of coordinate System

Helo,

Could any one tell under which conditions one should use cartesian
coordinate system and when cylindrcial.Suppose If I have a
force acting on the circumference of a cylindrical surface should
I use Cyl. coordinate system. And if there is a combination of axial
and circumferential loads which is the best option.

Hope someone can guide.

Thankyou,

sudhish

It all depends what information must be assigned or obtained from the model. For example, if the load is in the radial direction but it is constant then you can used either and in the case of the cartesian coordinate system you could use a pressure load. The pressure load will do the same job as a radial load using cylindrical coordinate system. As far as results if you need toobtained hoops or radial stresses the model will need to have cylindrical coordinate systems to postprocess these results.
