Automatically skip certain layers -> step

When creating a step file I go into every part and skip surfaces and hidden items. It's not that much work to convert a file or two but when it comes to larger assemblies it gets rather time consuming. Is it possible to automatically skip layers with a certain name when creating a step file?

Okay, if it's not built into the system. Is it possible to write some sort of script and connect it to a mapkey? I'm not good at writing scripts but I'm willing to learn. Can anyone give some hits on how to do this?

Config option intf_out_blanked_entities NO
and blank / Hide the layers in assy before export?
(I believe it's also possible to, via config option(s),
to blank specific layers on opening a file. I'd search
options for "blank" or "layer" trying to find out more.)
