Surface merge problems

I'm trying to merge a variable section sweep (large surface)with a regular sweep (smaller surface). ProE 2001 just comes back with the error message Cannot merge the two quilts. The intersection of the two is an ellipse that is within the bounderies of each surface. Why won't it merge?

Looks like an accuracy issue. I was able to merge these surfaces by reducing the accuracy number of this part from default of .0012 to .0009

Changing the accuracy from .0012 to .0009 solved the problem. Thanks lcoates68!
