Running Pro/E Remotely

We have hired a few contractors to do design work for us from home. They need to run Pro/E at home to do this. A few years back I done the same for another company, I had Pro/E installed on my home machine while using a VPN to get a license on their server. Are there other ways of doing this? I am meeting some resistance to getting a VPN set up.

If your license server can be seen by IP address from the outside the outside installs could just look for the license server by IP address. And if the outside computers have a static IP then you could only allow those IP's to access the server.

Boydt,

Don't know if this helps, but I have a ProE license that I can use anywhere.

The license MAC address is on a wireless (not necessary to be wireless as far as I can tell)USB network adaptor.Install ProE software on any PC andI can just plug the USB in and go.

You can modify your license.dat file and add a port number (i.e. 7789) for flexlm to watch. Then forward this port through your firewall to your license server. Now anyone that knows the name or IP of Internet side of your firewall can setup up their ProE to get a license from your server.

If you wish to limit access you can also setup Flexlm to only provide licenses to certain users, computers or domains.

If you need more detail let me know.

Has anyone heard of leasing a license? Say you only need a license for a 6 month period.... Makes more sense to lease instead of buy?

Starting from WF3 there is another way to do this and that is to configure your license server to allow license borrowing.
Starting from WF3 you get two different license files from PTC.
One is the standard license file and you need this if you also want to run ProE versions prior to WF3. This license file does NOT allow you license borrowing.
If you don't need WF2 or previous versions you can use the second license file which will allow you to use license borrowing but which won't allow you to run any ProE versions prior to WF3, so WF2, WF1, 2001, ... won't run with this license file.

This way your contractors can use Pro/E licenses from your pool of licenses for a specified period of time without the need for being connected to your license server.

Best regards,

John,

I believe there is a time limit on borrowing. I am not sure but my memory tells me it was something like 10 days then the license get "returned".

Seems simple enough if someone had some WF3 licenses on a server that you could pay to use for a period of time. When you have the need you contact them, they set your computer up to VPN into their server and you use 1 of their licenses as long as you need it and pay for it. Would this work?
