Renaming Components...

New member
I have sub-assemblies and parts that are referenced in several unrelated assemblies. I would like to rename some of these components. Is there a way I can do this without opening all the top-level assemblies?

You only need to open the assemblies that it is actually a component in. If it's a component of a subassy, you don't need to open the upper level assy.

Don't forget the drawings.

How was that SW/Pro debate going?

It's killing you not knowing, isn't it?

Actually, it's kind of fizzled, thankfully. Want to start one here?

Only Intralink and Windchill can manage a rename without problems.

Doing a rename from pro/E is likely to produce some missing components because there is no "where used" function to check if you opened all referencing assemblies.

Be cautious!

Yes... Be carefull.

Like it was said, have every subassembly open where that item appears. Also open the parts drawing. You don't need to open the subassembly drawings.

I do this all of the time while conceptualizing stuff, then rename the parts to an official part number once I have the design finalized.

Renaming old parts that could be in hundreds of assemblies would be hard.
