Modeling a Violin.

I'm trying to model a violin, and I can model pretty much everything but the violin scroll (the head) and the headrest. Everything I visualize seems to go about modeling it with crude excessive effort and doesn't feel like it encompasses the fluidity of the geometry.

Let's start with the head (the scroll). The following is what I'm having trouble with:

I'm on a shortage of ideas. The connection between the arm and the entire head element seems foreign to me, and I don't know how to construct the spiral, let alone keep it flush with the changing head width.

Thanks for any help in advance.
