License, seats, etc.

Hey all,

I recently got an upgraded work computer (which is great) for work. When I talked to the license guys at PTC they told me that it doesn't matter what I do with the old computer. I thought that I had to delete that copy as soon as I moved the license on the new computer.

Does this mean that I can install Pro-Engineer for a computer at home (by calling them)?

We only have two "seats" of Pro-Engineer and each computer we install are their own license server/client. Does this mean that as long as there is only two instances of Pro/Engineer is running, we're alright?

Thanks,

Hi

By the sounds of it, you have 2 node-locked licenses (each is their own license server/client) - so this means 2 seats is all you can install and legally run. PTC saying "it doesn't matter..." sounds a little lax - the license transfer states you must delete the executables or delete the flexlm license file. If you have floating licenses, you could float them on a network, howeverI don't think you'll be able to install Pro/E on your home computer.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I figured as much. I guess I'll get the personal version of Pro/Engineer for home. Do any of you use this edition? At work, we pay an annual maintenance fee just to be able to call them/get updates. However, I just need a basic CAD package for home and doesn't need to have the latest upgrades. I see on this web site, there is an offer for personal edition for about 300 bucks--is this for one year or permanent?

Thanks,

I think it matters if you upgraded your license or purchased a new license. If you purchased a new license the old license on your old cumputer should still be valid. You should be able to transfer the old license to any workstation.
