iPhone Pro/Engineer Model, Anyone?

Hey everyone.

Please forgive me if this is inappropriate, or in the wrong section, but I
searched for the best forum to post into.

I'm looking for an exact iPhone ProE model. While I'm more than proficient
in making the model myself, I just thought I'd save some effort and ask.

I have a 3D plotter, so in exchange for your hard work, I could cut you
several models.

This would be extremely beneficial to both parties, because if you have a
model designed, you'll likely appreciate having a dummy for trial / error
rather then using the actual phone.

I'd also be open to an iPod Touch model.

I know. I follow Apple very closely, and have done so for many years.

I will be designing a new model also.

Here's the trick:

iPhone user upgrades >> passes old iPhone to family member / friend.

Friend needs a case / holder.

This trend of increases accessory sales of old models when new ones ship
occurs with Apple products all the time. It's a good time to be designing
for the old / new iPhone.

By the way, the changes of an actual release on Monday at WWDC 08 (as
opposed to an unveiling) are slim... Apple will need time to change poster
boards, close stores before the reopening sale, prep AT&T stores on the
changes / upgrades / saleability, reposter AT&T stores, etc.

apples, macs, solidworks, no thanks

Well, I doubt you will find anything fro Apple. They have used Unigraphics/NX for almost 20 years to design all of the products and tooling with.

NX4+ has been available on MAC OSx just for this reason. Apple would NOT use Windows-based computers, so they have been using Unix workstations all these years.

They are smarter than I have been giving them credit for.

probably good enough if your going to develop a sheath or holster of some sort for that existing product but still .... I think those edges are g2 not g1 rounds.

I obtained 1 hi-res image of the iPhone showing a side view. I was able to
scale the image in Photoshop to the exact mm measurements from Apple,
then use the rulers in Photoshop to determine the size. My measurements
came out to an ellipse 13mm x 16mm that is tangent to the back and
truncated at the front. This correlates very well with the model I drew..
almost exactly in fact...

Andy.... There is only one andy that would scale something in photoshop. Is this andy from Chicago that works on the west coast now. ;) .... no after reading the original post my andy did not use proe since 13 years old. Thats impressive by the way. Where does your father work? My daughter has been using Maya since she was three.

Apple design group uses Pro/E and Alias Studio

FWIW, Apple uses Alias Studio in their "Industrial" Design group. Not their "Product" Design group. Product Design as a whole has been on Unigraphics since the early 80's as previously mentioned, with Pro/E being used on keyboards/mice.

Fresh from Apple's Made For iPod Developer Connection:

The details about the iPhone & iPhone 3G that you've requested are not
available; according to engineering the corners of the iPods & iPhone are
not true radii, but complex b-splines. The only way to represent these
corners & surfaces is via a very detailed CAD/CAM file of the iPhone 3G,
which we are not releasing to 3rd parties.

So, with respect, there is nothing you can do to get more details about
the industrial design of the iPod, iPod touch, or iPhone. That information
is not available.

Best regards,

So no thoughts on this anymore guys?

I would LOVE those B-Spline dimensions.

Anyone know if I can do some math to figure those out?

Perhaps my only hope is to find someone with a 3d scanner at this point?

Hey how about this guys, actually i started modeling 3G Apple iphone
the way before and stopped by just doing the outer cases only becoz of
my hectic work schedule. Here are some of the pics, have a look at
that...
