Creating a meshed design from a solid?

Hi all,

apologies if this has been covered, tried looking through your archives but couldn't find anything so hopefully someone can help me.

Am trying to design a helmet made out of meshed metal. I have a helmet design as shown here...

and I am trying to make it so it resembles ameshed material, kinda like wrapping chicken wire round your head. I made a crude start like below

by following the curve but it'll take forever and more importantly, it won't be right due to the cut following the plane and not the face. What I basically want is for a hole pattern to spread round the helmet, cuts perpindicular to the shell if you know what I mean. If anyone can tell me, if there's a simple thing I'm missing with the pattern option for example I'd be most appreciative.

Cheers.
