braces between ribs

If I've got 6 vertical ribs on a piece of sheet metal,3 on the left, 3 on the right. I mirrored the left side (created a new part in assembly) and patterned them both.

Now I want to create braces between them. I create a part (just a rectangular protrusion).

Whats the best way to position and set the length of these braces? I can use relations (yuck) or I can protrude to selected surface in the assembly - but it won't let me select the right of side of the vertical rib - so it runs through, and I have an extra brace dangling (3 ribs/3 braces - I want 3 ribs/2 braces). Should I just insert them all seperately instead of pattern by reference?
