Why do planes, and most other man made flying machines have 3 wings?

I dont have much knowledge of aeronautics. I wish to learn from great engineers like you, why it works like that only?

Go to the link above. The web site is not finish yet but there is a book you can download that talks all about why planes are design the way they are. And as far as planes with three wings? The VTOL only has one.
