For some reason in drawing mode when I try to show axes, this message comes up like there are no axes to show.

Why? I do this all the time.

I have also had this problem a few times and ended up having to create a new axis - no idea what the issue is though.

I have seen this before also. I found that many times if you open up the drawing tree (with the Annotate tab active) you will see items that are grayed out. These are items that have been erased. Check to see if these are the axis's you are looking for. If you right click on those, you get an option to unerase. You can also click once to highlight them in the drawing.
