I have run into that before as well... annoying. I was lucky, because I knew exaclty where I was tweaking in my model, so after pulling a couple of datums out of a few features, the error message went away.
Dont use embedded datums its just a reciepe for error
messages.
Most of the time this will happen when you have a non-
embeded feature, you reference it for other features and
then you embed the datum into a feature. Then at that
point all of the features that reference that datum will
complain except for the feature its embedded into.
If you embed the datum right away it will not allow you to
use it as a reference.
