Joining referenced parts in SW

Hi. Can anyone tell a successful method for join two parts
together (to form one solid body) and have both parts update if their original
parts file are modified?

What version of SW are you running? I've done something similar but only on 2008. In the assembly, I did a cut offset to the surface of another body within the assembly and this was reflected when I opened the (cut) part as an individual part. I'm not sure if this is possible on SW07 or earlier.
