I see that my OP wasn't clear enough. The axis I want to rename is the 'virtual' axis that is created as part of the sketch, not an axis that is added after the feature has been generated....(the axis does not appear in the model tree)
One way would be to select the axis in the model or drawing (you might change the selection filter to axis), then right click- properties-name. The axis created with a revolved feature or hole is selectable apart from the feature.
