Text extrude cut on a curved surface

I know how to project my text onto a curved surface and make the text raised but how do you cut your text into the curved surface? Below is a picture of my text projected onto a swept blend surface. I need to cut into the curved surface to have a uniform thickness. How do I do this?

I think you have to create anoffsetsurface and extrude text to selected item.
