Renaming A Sub-Assembly

What is the best way to rename a sub-assembly to keep all reference in the sub -assemby and the parent assembly? Is the method to bring up the both parent assy and with subassembly in session as the same time, change the file name and use Save As command . Lastly replace the renamed sub-assembly in the assy?

I did try the above method and there is an error stating "cannot replace file with the same name" . File properties in the assy shows the component name was not changed, but the model path references the re-named sub-assy . I would guess I can change the component name without a problem, but this method seems a little cumbersome to me.

Hi there,

You can do this through SolidWorks Explorer.

Open Explorer, navigate to your assembly file, right-click and choose 'Rename'. this should change the file name and update everything that references it in SolidWorks.

Good luck!
