Real simple problem *Help

all i am looking to do is drop in a JPG to trace in a sketch....and im out of ideas

You have 2 ways:

Go in style feature, Sketch > Trace sketch

Create surfaces that will represent planes, create new color material, and as texture put your jpg file. Apply this new material color to representative surface, and thats it.

If all you need is an image on the surface you can assign an image to be placed on it under the color and appearance settings.

such as: view-->color and appearance-->map tab--> define texture and position--> select surface to apply to.

If you want this viewable in your 2d drawing then there are other methods...
this has been discussed in other topics as well...
