Model Part Numbering Question

Hello,

Our part numbering system is split into 4 sections: 1) Project
Reference, 2) Sub assembly, 3) Sequential Number, 4) Descriptive Name.

I have parts that are used in multiple projects.

Would you:

a) Do a Save Copy so that the name can be changed to reflect the appropriate project, or do you

b) Just use that part in a different project even though the part
number will technically not reflect the project you are using it for.

Choosing a) seems to make sense from a CAD perspective. But the
inventory guys now have two part numbers for the exact same part. Kind
of confusing and not sure what to do. (This system is just being
implemented, so there is no company policy regarding this yet)

Thanks

I think its a common scenario. I prefer to just use the same part including its original name even though it seems irrelevant when looking into a particular project. So your choice B. Its quite simple really as the factory/assembly line or whatever know which part it is, and if its a common part it would be much more confusing having the same part numerous times under different numbers/names.

Arrghh why cant we call everything 1, 2, 3, 4 .............

Insert the part into the new assembly, right click on it in the model tree and make it flexible. Then choose the parameter tab and make the drawing name flexible and name it how you would like... That should work
