Maintenance Contract

one more question on maintenance contracts -

if you have 5 ProE seats, what's the difference between
getting maintenance on only one seat, as opposed to getting
it on all of them? would you still be able to get any
software updates and install them for all the 5 licenses?
it seems like once you have the installation files, you
would be able to upgrade all.

It depends on how you have your licenses set up. If your
running a single license server and each work station
"checks out" a license for that machine, your going to
have to deal with PTC on your new upgrades for each
license.

If you node lock your license to a workstation, that
machine could get upgraded while the rest of the machines
stay at their current release.

We have done it all. It is negotiable to add the licenses back in for minimal cost. If you keep some licenses on maintenance or you upgrade your licenses and renew the support at the same time, you have more negotiating power.

If you drop all maintenance and simply want to renew it again 3 years later, you have very little negotiation power.

If you only maintain a license on a single seat, when a new version comes out, it requires a new license. You will only be able to aquire a new license on the seat under active maintanance.

Remember, there is a lot more to maintenance than phone support. You lose the knowledge base as well. This may be what a lot of people use and the reason they don't have any phone support.

You may not use it much but when you do need it, it pays for itself.

I think the cost is high but it would be expensive not to have it as well. We do "bank" some seats that we don't use and only renew those seats once we put them back into use. This helps to save some costs. We have never paid more than 3 months back maintenance. But remember, it's all in your negotiable power.

Thanks a lot for the info Scott.

so why is it that you have more negotiating power if you
keep some seats on maintenance, as opposed to dropping
all of them and then renewing all of them? I was under
the impression that no matter what the situation, if you
are trying to renew, you have negotiating power, because
they are getting business they otherwise wouldnt have.

whats the typical cost of renewing a license? does that
mean that license will be upgraded to the latest and
greatest version?
