break feature shapes out of a stp import

ok, here goes,


I'm trying to see if its possible to import a stp file and some how break up the one mass of dumb geometry into features. Using the imported shape as a pattern and mask the cutten away feature with maybe surfaces or something. I noticed when exporting stp, I have options to export layers but when I import the stp file, there are no layers. I thought maybe I could break up the feature on layers before I exported. Does anybody know what the layer option give you? Thanks for any input

Not sure if the layer-thing is meant for solid geometry, there's also drawing translation in STEP. AFAIK solid geometry is one body feature. If you want to make it smart you need a feature recognizer or have the ability to do direct editing.

Does PTC have a feature recognizer? I know Solidworks does and so does Edgeworks. thanks
