For the last few years we have been working on a Project called Wing. The aim was to develop a new 3D computer input device, something beyond what is on the market now. We’ve used Creo to get the design completed and have a fully working prototype.
The trouble is, we are mechanical engineers, and don’t know much about getting a software project like this started. We don’t have anything like the resources to contract out the driver programming for each different CAD program, and as the software would work for any joystick input, open-source seems the ideal way to go. Eventually we would be looking getting drivers for Creo, Solidworks, Maya, 3D Studio, Catia, NX, Solidedge, Inventor, Spaceclaim, IronCAD, SketchUp and the rest.
There are some more details on the Project Alpha Wing website and Facebook page. It’s all geared up towards games at the moment until we get the CAD side of things a bit more grounded.
If anyone can provide any advice on the best route forward or some pointers good open-source communities it would be really appreciated.
All the best,
Sam
