proper use of envelopes for space claim

I would like to use an envelope in order to make a associative shrink wrap. My intent is to take a few small assemblies represent them in a large assembly but protect them from change. The ability to go into the subassembly I used to make the sw, make updates and have the sw update after regen is what I am after. If anyone out there can outline the workflow and give some detail on how to pull this off I would be much appreciative. So farmy experimenting has not yeilded whatI want.
