Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5500 1.66GHz

Anyone also know if an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5500 1.66GHz is as quick as a pentium P4 3.06GHz processor.

If not, whats the equivelant or slightly better than the P4?

THANKS.

Generally, the P4 is the bottom of the barrel, so almost anything new will be significantly faster.

That said, the T5500 is rather low clocked. No doubt it has good overclocking capacity (though I don't recommend anyone to overclock productivity equipment) and is a very energy-efficient chip (though that is not interesting for a workstation) - but 1.66 MHz is nonetheless quite low even for a new-generation CPU.

Looking at OCUS benchmark, a 1.86GHz Core2 Duo is about 30-35% faster than a 3GHz P4, so the T5500 would only be slighty faster than your P4. Although the benefit of dual-core is nice, it is rather minor using Pro/E so I would recommend you a faster chip nonetheless.

Pricewise, the Athlon64/Opteron is best bang for the buck if you are on a tight budget. Performancewise, the faster Core 2 Duos are the best choice for only a bit more money. Don't even look at the P4 as an alternative.
