Would there be any problems with running PDMLink on a virtual server for a proof of concept/test case (i.e. minimal users and load).

Not at all.  In fact, that is the most flexible way of testing PDMLink functionality.  You can easily take a snapshot of a base install and then try different things out (that can possibly break it) and then roll back.

In fact it is supported by PTC. We have planned to use it in production on vmware ESX servers
